Tuscany in the Sky: A Tribeca Loft Rooted in Romance

room

From the moment you step into it, a house starts telling a story. In that regard, this Tribeca loft, far away in the distance over the beautiful Hudson River, is one such space. Many years ago, a couple had come to us with a very clear, personal idea: they wanted their home to reflect the spirit of their engagement trip to Southern Italy. And what developed was an unfolding of memories, handwork, and understated luxury into a timeless city retreat.

Our design work has in some way evolved with time; this project even manages to become a favorite. That was when we truly started putting personal histories into spatial narratives before it became a trademark of our studio.

A Soothing Palette, Elevated by Place

In over 3,000 square feet and adorned with panoramic views of the city, the loft had given us this strange choice: open, filled with sunlight, and dotted with endless possibilities. We certainly didn't want the views to contend with the interiors. Instead, we desired to create a cocoon over the city: soft, textured, and intimate.

Taking inspiration from the muted earth tones of Tuscany, the palette was created of chalky whites, warm travertine, soft greys, and aged wood. The material choice was to express the place in a tactile way: rustic, but refined; raw, but warm.

The travertine fireplace was another important element in the whole project: a sculptural centerpiece against a wall of red brick. We went through the great length of faux finishing of the original brick to give it an aged and authentic feel, thereby imparting an aura of permanence and patina.

Layering in Meaning and Memory

Throughout the home, every room became a space to honor something personal. In the entryway, a sculptural plaster console and a combination of organic textures set the Mediterranean mood right from the start. The presence of the vintage 1859 map of Italy in the workspace was a purposeful choice to reflect husband’s heritage—bringing legacy and storytelling into the workday.

With its centerpiece being a collection of vintage leather chairs, the living room became a place to slow down. We softened the harder surfaces with layering textiles in contrast to lighting that acts as a sculpture, coupled with antiques that appear bit by bit across time rather than all at once.

Even the nursery-to-be, planned before the arrival of the first child-was treated similarly, with the same reverence. Soft neutral tones and materials were used with layered textures to create a room that actively nurtures love and growth.
