Fall Feng Shui Reset: 7 Ways to Refresh Your Home's Energy
Every season asks something different of a home. Fall invites us to gather in, warm up, and let go of what no longer serves. As a designer who has practiced Feng Shui alongside luxury interior design for years, I like to treat the change of season as a natural reset. Here's my short list.
(Feng Shui is a traditional practice, and I share these as design principles that help spaces feel calmer, not as guaranteed outcomes.)
1. Clear the entry first
The entry is where energy, and everyone who lives there, arrives. Keep it free of piled shoes, mail, and clutter, with good light and a clear path.
2. Edit before you add
Before bringing out the fall decor, remove what you no longer love or use. Start with surfaces, then one closet or drawer.
3. Move from cool to warm
Swap light, airy textiles for wool, velvet, and linen in warmer tones. In Feng Shui terms, you're supporting the earth element: comfort, grounding, stability.
4. Refresh your lighting
Replace harsh bulbs with warm ones and add table lamps or sconces for evening. Good light is the fastest way to change how a room feels.
5. Rebalance the five elements
If a room feels stuck, check the balance: wood (plants, wood tones), fire (candles, warm light), earth (ceramics, stone), metal (brass, mirrors), water (glass, dark tones). You don't need all five in equal amounts, just a sense of harmony.
6. Give your bed and desk a supported position
Where possible, place your bed and desk so you can see the door without being directly in line with it. It's a classic "command position" idea, and it tends to help rooms feel more secure and focused.
7. Bring in one living thing
A healthy plant or fresh branches add life and movement. Keep them cared for. A struggling plant does the opposite.
