Before and After: Lombardy Hotel Home Away From Home Design Project
Lombardy Hotel Living Room design - Marie Burgos Design
Creating The Home Away From Home Design Project
Marie Burgos Hospitality Design Studio was commissioned to reimagine two guest suites at Manhattan’s iconic Lombardy Hotel, transforming them into refined, contemporary retreats designed for both long-term owners and short-stay guests.
Each suite includes a living room, master bedroom, en-suite kitchen, and master bath. The goal: to create bright, open spaces that feel like a true home away from home—while maintaining the durability and elegance required in a luxury hospitality environment.
The Client Vision
The owners are based in Europe and travel to New York several times a year for both business and leisure. They wanted suites that reflected their personal sense of comfort and style, while also appealing to Lombardy guests during periods when the suites would be rented.
Their brief called for:
Contemporary, light-filled interiors
Sophisticated yet welcoming design
Materials that would withstand frequent use
A layout optimized for short, comfortable stays
The existing spaces were dated, with worn carpeting, tired bathrooms, and inefficient layouts. Our challenge was to modernize every element while preserving warmth and livability.

Kitchenette – Suite #1
Before: Inefficient layout with limited storage and dark and outdated finishes.
After: Custom cabinetry and compact appliances create a functional, elegant mini kitchen.
Living Room – Suite #1
Before: A closed-off layout with tired furnishings and worn carpeting.
After: Open, light-filled living area with warm wood flooring and tailored seating.
LOMBARDY HOTEL SUITE - MARIE BURGOS DESIGN
Suite #1 was conceived as a more residential-style retreat, offering a full living room, dedicated dining area, complete kitchen, master bedroom, and en-suite bathroom. The intention was to create a space that could comfortably accommodate longer stays while maintaining the refined standards of luxury hospitality.
The scope of work included:
Full renovation of the living and dining room
Complete kitchen redesign
Master bedroom transformation
En-suite bathroom remodel
The living and dining areas were reconfigured to feel open and inviting, with comfortable seating and a layout designed for both relaxation and entertaining. High-end finishes and durable contract-grade wallcoverings were selected to ensure longevity without compromising style.
The kitchen was fitted with custom cabinetry and compact, efficient appliances to maximize functionality in a limited footprint. Thoughtful storage solutions were integrated throughout the apartment, including generous closets and discreet luggage storage.

Scope of Work
The renovation included:
Full remodel of the living area with dining zone and kitchenette
Complete redesign of the en-suite bathroom
Replacement of all flooring
Custom storage solutions
New window treatments and lighting
The original bathroom was extremely dated and required a full transformation using modern materials and updated finishes. We introduced clean lines, contemporary surfaces, and refined fixtures to create a spa-like space that feels fresh and timeless.
Bar kitchenette – Suite #2
Before: Old cabinetry and poor space planning limited usability.
After: Streamlined kitchen with custom millwork and efficient appliances.
In the bar kitchenette, we designed custom cabinetry paired with compact, high-performance appliances—perfect for small spaces and short stays. Storage was a key priority: dedicated luggage compartments and well-planned closets ensure a clutter-free experience for guests.
Design Approach: Hospitality Meets Home
To replace the old carpeting, we introduced wood flooring throughout both suites, instantly elevating the atmosphere while providing durability and warmth. The palette was kept neutral and calming, layered with high-end finishes and textures to maintain a luxury feel without overwhelming the space.
Key design elements include:
Contract-grade wallpaper for durability
Custom cabinetry for efficient storage
Comfortable, tailored sofas and beds
Automated blackout window treatments for restful sleep
Soft, pleasing neutral tones for visual harmony
Every choice balanced aesthetics with function—ensuring the suites remain beautiful, practical, and long-lasting.
The Result
The transformed suites now feel like elegant private apartments rather than traditional hotel rooms. They are inviting, serene, and thoughtfully designed for both short visits and extended stays. The result is a refined retreat that reflects the Lombardy Hotel’s prestige while offering guests a deeply personal and comfortable experience.
This project embodies our philosophy of hospitality design:
Luxury should feel effortless. Comfort should feel intentional. And every space should tell a story of belonging.
