The Murray Hill Residence, which is historically in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan, presents a divinely articulate blend of modern aesthetics, global influences, and timeless elegance. This 1,200-square-foot prewar apartment has been extensively renovated to fit the constants of modern life.
In designing a new apartment, such that it retains elements of its former architectural glory, but modern functionality and warmth make the overall feel very different, Marie Burgos Design conducted the re-imagination from top to bottom with respect to the existing layout and interior experience of the space.
The transformation began with some minor structural work that opened up a formerly segmented space. The entry foyer, now opened with a raised ceiling onto the living and kitchen areas, flooded with light and felt wonderfully expansive, quite a change from its former dark and enclosed self. These architectural moves instilled a watchword feeling into the design narrative: a worshipping of light, movement, and harmony.
Entryway and Layout Transformation
One of the core challenges of prewar architecture is the compartmentalized nature of its interiors. In this residence, reconfiguring the layout allowed for greater spatial fluidity. Walls were removed to connect the foyer, kitchen, and living areas, allowing natural light to reach deeper into the home and enhancing the sense of volume.
The spatial redesign was further supported by thoughtful lighting solutions. Recessed ceiling lights, elegant modern pendants, and a striking copper chandelier ensure the space remains bright, layered, and dynamic throughout the day and evening. These lighting elements do more than illuminate—they define spaces, add sculptural beauty, and bridge the transitional tones of each room.
Kitchen: Efficient, Elegant, and Open
At the center of the home is a newly expanded kitchen—its design is rooted in practicality and visual appeal. Previously enclosed and limited in functionality, the kitchen was opened up with the addition of a peninsula that extends into the living room. This peninsula serves multiple roles: casual dining space, food prep area, storage solution, and visual anchor.
Custom cabinetry was designed to fit the galley-style layout efficiently. Pale grey cabinets establish a soft and calming foundation punctuated by sophisticated brass hardware that adds warmth and subtle contrast. A full-height pantry maximizes storage without overwhelming the space.
One of the standout features of the kitchen is the herringbone-patterned backsplash from AKDO. Its subtle shimmer introduces texture and a touch of glamour while staying true to the tranquil palette of the space. The combination of open flow, custom finishes, and hidden functionality makes this kitchen a high-performing hub of daily life.
Living Room: Warmth, Functionality, and Architectural Detail
The open-plan living room is designed to be both inviting and expressive. Here, craftsmanship and personal expression meet in the form of custom oak millwork that runs the length of one wall. This built-in library is both architectural and emotional—a showcase for books, art, and family keepsakes. At its center, a contemporary electric fireplace adds ambiance and warmth while maintaining a sleek, minimalist profile.
Furnishings were selected for comfort and versatility. A generously proportioned Bludot sectional anchors the room with clean lines and a relaxed profile. It is paired with colorful accent chairs that offer flexibility and introduce playful, global-inspired color into the otherwise serene palette. The mix of soft and hard surfaces, wood and metal, and light and dark tones lends depth and dynamism to the living space.
Large windows framed by neutral drapery allow light to flood the room, while the sculptural copper chandelier adds an unexpected focal point. Layered lighting design ensures that the room can transition from daytime brightness to evening intimacy with ease.
Nursery: Soft, Imaginative, and Adaptive
One of the more innovative aspects of the redesign is the adaptive use of space. What was once a home office was transformed into a peaceful nursery. The new nursery space is imaginative yet soothing, featuring soft materials, natural textures, and thoughtful storage solutions designed for growth and change.
To preserve workspace functionality within the home, a sleek floating walnut desk was installed in the hallway—demonstrating how small interventions can yield significant lifestyle benefits. This hallway office solution preserves visual openness while maintaining practicality, showing that even transitional spaces can serve multiple purposes with elegant design.
Bathroom: A Spa-Inspired Escape
The bathroom, once dated and closed in, was completely reimagined as a private retreat inspired by luxury spas. The design centers around a serene material palette dominated by marble textures, brass fixtures, and warm wood accents. A St. James vanity in a rich, earthy finish grounds the space, while brass hardware introduces elegance and contrast.
Integrated lighting, a minimalist mirror, and clean lines contribute to the bathroom’s calming atmosphere. Every element is functional yet beautiful—ensuring the space is as efficient as it is indulgent. Small design choices—like hidden storage and layered lighting—support daily routines while elevating the overall experience of the space.
