Turtle Lovers in Design

The Chinese believe that the turtle has the secret of heaven and of earth within its body because its back symbolizes Heaven and that its underside represents Earth. They love turtles and it is a great Feng Shui symbol of prosperity.

The turtle  is also associated with longevity and wisdom. Incredibly, sea turtles have existed on earth longer than any other vertebrate animal — they were here when dinosaurs evolved and became extinct, and they survived the Ice Age.

The turtle’s whole life is one of steadfastness, effort, and patience. It lives a slow and steady life of “non-doing.” There is a saying, “Home is where the heart is” — the turtle is always at home within itself.

I don’t advocate the killing of turtles for their shells. My grand father who is now 89 years old was a fisherman all his life and tought us to love and respect this beautiful creatures from the sea and earth... He ones made a guitar out of a giant turtle shell he found, which is still in my Grand parents living room in Martinique. I was surprised to actually find one just alike.

In design, which is my passion, I noticed more and more turtle lovers who surround themselves with turtle shells or representations of turtles.

Look at this beautiful turtle shell from Horchow , handcrafted of composites with a hand-painted antique burnished silver-leaf finish. Great way to showcase your love of turtles without going for the real shell.

I also love the look of the porcelain turtle lamps by Jonathan Adler. A great way to make your interior chic and fun at the same time!

Which one of these turtles do you like best? Would you use turtle shells in your home?

Tips for making a larger space appear cozy

Living Room Design by Marie Burgos

Large spaces feel cozier when you can create distinct moments that relate to each other without competing.

Dividing a large space by identifying multiple functions works as long as the areas chosen for each activity add up to a harmonious statement. I like to start by creating a color story, and then figure out how each space in the room can contribute to the telling of that story while maintaining a subtle integrity.

Above, I have created a reading area in a corner of this large living space. Below you can see the main space with entertainment centre and a great statement with an aquarium for my client who is a lover of all the beauties of the sea...

In this space I have also used all the natural elements of Feng Shui which are water, wood, earth, fire and metal.

In the photo below, you can discover another angle of the space which showcases the original features of this home such as the red brick column. It always makes sense to keep beautiful original features.

See the yoga space created which can be used as a fabulous dance floor for entertainment when meditating time is over by just removing the tatamis.

Beautiful look of Coral in design...

Coral design accessories What is a coral?

A coral is a rocklike deposit consisting of the calcareous skeletons secreted by various anthozoans. Coral deposits often accumulate to form reefs or islands in warm seas.

They can come in red-orange, pinkish, or white colors with a variety of  shades and are used a lot to make jewelry and ornaments.

Adopting the coral look at home is bringing a beautiful natural element from the sea into your interior.

Many designers have used corals in their designs wether natural or man made. They all bring a special architectural or peaceful touch depending of heir size, color  and shapes to the room.

The Glamorous look of Black and White Room Designs!

Black and White living room

The use of Black and White in design can create a stunning and dramatic decor.

There's a rule in decorating that says that "every room can use a touch of black." You might think this is strange if you have a room of pastels or jewel tones.  But using the color black adds a focal point of color that grounds, anchors, and adds a sophisticated look to a room.

Black in accessories, light fixtures, trims, paint, or in one bold piece of furniture will help to catch the eye and sharpen any decorating scheme. It will serve as an outline that sets off specific areas or objects. Black by itself is striking!

But to get real drama and spark, pair black with white.

The use of black and white in design gives a fresh, clean, and unquestionably sophisticated and elegant look to any room.

If you're afraid of using just black and white, add variety by adding areas of yellow, pink, camel, red, turquoise or purple for a striking look. Keeping black and white prominent, however, preserves the elegant effect.

Here are examples of stunning rooms designed with a Black and White theme.

Designing with CHOCOLATE color!

picture-571

Design your home by dipping it into chocolate, warm browns with toasty overtones that delight the senses and create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.

Interior decorating trends are warming up to chocolate. Rich mochas, dusty cocoas, and deep coffee shades are cropping up in homes, bringing a depth to pallets that had previously been rather cool or just beige...

Banish any idea that dark walls make for a dark, dull room. Darker walls create a more sophisticated atmosphere. And don't be afraid to use a strong color in a small area.

Interior by david Hicks

To balance dark chocolate walls, bring in neutral upholstery, lamps, and accessories. This approach keeps the space from feeling too closed in. Crisp cream colors are a welcome contrast against the chocolate brown.

Here crisp white and a fun mustard color are paired with the chocolate walls in Amanda Nisbet Design

When you decide to bring darker colors into your home its important to counter this with some contrasting colors. Imagine how beautiful a living room or bedroom of rich chocolate browns could be with white accessories and accents. A few simple additions in dove grey or a lighter bisque color can really make a dramatic statement.

In this dining area all the dark brown walls that provide such coziness are Bittersweet Chocolate by Ben Moore, in case you were wondering!

The color brown and its lighter cousins in tan, taupe, beige, or cream make excellent backgrounds helping accompanying colors appear richer, brighter. Use brown to convey a feeling of warmth, honesty, and wholesomeness. Although found in nature year-round, brown is often considered a fall and winter color. It is more casual than black.

Interior by Marie Burgos Design

Here in one of my designs , I have used different shades of browns from deep chocolate brown to lighter browns, bronze and tans.

Chocolate brown kitchen cabinetry

Thanks to Brandon Barre Photography: Gorgeous, gorgeous kitchen! Chocolate brown stained kitchen cabinets shelves and coffee bar, white marble countertops, nickel fixtures, black iron lantern pendant lights, French doors, black crystal chandelier, white dining table with cabriole legs, French dining chairs and soft gray walls.

Another way to bring out the richness of chocolate browns is to add natural pieces such as plants.

Once your design is done, just curl up in your favorite sofa with a nice cup of hot thick italian hot chocolate and enjoy the rich warmth of your home design.
